Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an annual October proclamation issued by the City of Fairfax recognizing efforts to combat domestic violence and support survivors.
The City Council has presented the proclamation in at least two consecutive years. On October 14, 2025, Mayor Catherine S. Reed proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, with the proclamation presented to Lani Calalang (also referred to as "Lainey Kalilang" in transcript), Assistant Director of Domestic Violence & Supportive Housing at Shelter House; the 2025 theme was "With Survivors Always." The proclamation cited statistics from the National Domestic Violence Hotline — that one in four women and one in ten men have been victims of severe intimate partner violence, affecting more than 10 million people annually — and recognized Shelter House's partnership with the Fairfax County Office for Women in Domestic Violence services.
On October 13, 2026, the City Council again presented a proclamation acknowledging October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Fairfax, continuing the annual tradition.
