A maintained knowledge base built from council and commission meetings — updated as new meetings land. Last synced Aug 4, 2026.
Overview
through May 12, 2026The City of Fairfax's Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) Update is a state-mandated five-year update to the city's solid waste management plan, covering a twenty-year planning horizon, required under Virginia state code. Work on the update was already underway as of July 2025, when it was noted the plan had last been updated in 2021. On February 3, 2026, Environmental Sustainability Specialist Melissa McDonald and consultants Helen Lee and Olivia Polamini of RRS presented a progress update to City Council at a work session; no Council action was taken at that time, though staff noted over 600 public survey responses had been collected. On May 12, 2026, City Council held a public hearing and unanimously adopted Resolution R-26-26 approving the SWMP Update; the plan will now be submitted to VDEQ for review and approval.
