Work Session – Potential amendments to the City of Fairfax Zoning Ordinance related to adopted small area plans

1:53:09

Paul Cunninghamin that I believe we have adopted master plans for almost everything I can think of as we're going forward, you know, from parks to the city to everybody has now developed a master plan. And so I think one of our challenges is to get our hands around the master plans see if they do form a coherent vision moving forward so that the rules that we write will meet the needs of the citizens of the city which means recognizing the character of the city what we are and what we want to be and then balancing that with the fact that we are victims if you will of the area we live in. We are not going to get away from denser development. We are not going to get away from upscale business activities and the things that go with being in this geographic area.

Paul Nabtistaffnoticed in looking at these in multiple years the Planning Commission suggested prioritizing pedestrian safety whether it be as a whole or identifying specific projects and did want to note that over the course of these years specifically a pedestrian master plan and a safe streets for all or vision zero plan were recommended those are now underway as part of the same project in combination with the old town circulation study so those have been funded there have been consistent recommendations related to parks whether it be about the parks master or about specific projects. For several years, there were specific recommendations to support the Willard-Shirtwood Community Center, which has now received all the funding that's been requested.

James Featheridentified in the comp land he provided that list I went through that list as well see if there have been previous appropriations for those which projects and he's captured you know those like the West Drive property or acquisition not previously appropriated in the plan for this year some others previously appropriated one presumes we're not going to make a recommendation all of a sudden stop something that's now in progress like the climate adaptation resiliency plan for EVs readiness plan solid waste management things like that these were appropriated in fiscal year 2025. van dyke master plan implementation can we put a lot of emphasis in parks that was appropriated using arpa funds for example um and then he identified a few

Matthew Ricebut more city vehicles being placed in other areas so amongst all the projects and things going on my request to to private the last meeting was to try to articulate what they would like us to recommend and emphasize and we reviewed the past recommendations that we've made and always had support for parks specifically for the Parks and Rec Advisory Board the Van Dyke master plan and its implementation is critical it's a really important location within the city heavily used it kind of forms the northern part of a spine that's continuous all the way from City Hall all the way up through you know Daniel's run st. Leo's and so forth the park is just really important it's also inherently tied to all the things happening with Willard Sherwood
