Joint Discussion with the School Board Regarding School Bonds and Renovations

0:28

JC MartinezstaffWe do, Council Member Peterson, so we have an estimate, and that's a working estimate because not all those projects have been fully appropriated. So we do have a five-year CIP plan that was approved, only one year appropriate, and then you look out four years. Some of the bigger projects that are sort of coming online or being proposed are the property yard, fire station three, Whirlwood-Shirlwood, and then also potentially in addition to the police headquarters garage. In combination, that's about another $150 million about. out so i would easily say that potentially about half of what's being proposed here for the 220 million so half of that would easily be another potential 10 cents just on the real estate tax

Stacy HallThank you, Whitney Houston. but I do just think that this is something that nearly 70 percent of our residents said they wanted and I would actually be very curious to see if we put some of these other projects on a ballot what their approval rating would be because I think that we have if you look at the CIP I think there's been a number of projects that have been added on in recent years that it seems like we don't know where the money is going to be coming from but we just put them this five-year plan and hope that somehow they're going to happen and as far as I'm concerned the other projects that have been mentioned the property yard I understand there are concerns there there are restrictions there are problems the fire station the Willard Sherwood Center the

JC Martinezstaffwould be from Willard Sherwood as a standalone project. The property yard is another 60-some-odd million dollars, along with the fire station, so they start adding up relatively quick.

Anthony AmosThank you. Great presentation. Just a quick note for everyone as well. I do want to know that Fairfax County did a public bond referendum last year for public safety services, and it passed with roughly the same rate of schools at 70%. So I'm sure if that were on the referendum, that would be a good benchmark to assess that from. People care about public safety and schools relatively equally. There could be some disproportion, but regardless, I did want to flag that statistic. In addition to that, and this may be a separate conversation or a later follow-up, but for opportunities to institute some PPEA agreements and to work on, for example, Fire Station 3, have we made any progress in that regard?

Stacy HallI am on board with both at the same time the thing that I do want to point out though is that when we had the PPE a specifically associated with the fire station one of the things that if i recall they heavily focused on was adding additional residential and my understanding is that that is a frequent or common denominator when it comes to ppeas or pbeas whatever you want to call them and i'm not opposed to that but i do just think that we need to again look holistically at the other proposals that are coming our way at the other areas of retail that are being diminished and turned into residential and to the school's credit trying to understand how many more students will be coming in and what that additional tuition cost is going to be and how all these numbers work together
