Update and Discussion on Move Fairfax City (Safety Action Plan, Pedestrian Plan, and Old Town Circulation Study)

1:07

Chloe Ritterstaffwas the conversion of Main Street and North Street from a one-way couplet to two-way traffic on both of those streets. And at about the same time, the city of Fairfax Library was built and the Old Town Village was built. And since that time, most of the projects that have been done have been kind of nibbling around the edges to try to improve pedestrian safety and pedestrian comfort, but not really changes. So for example, we've done spot widening of sidewalks, we've done some crosswalk improvements, we've tried to improve some of the lighting in Old Town. We've done some improvements north and south of Old Town with the bike lanes, and we're working on the South Street extension. So all of those projects, again,

Speaker 9widen or add future streets you know the south street extension is coming in but beyond that there's a lot of you know there's a limited area where we could look to you know potentially add a street or anything like that emergency access utility conflicts you know we've got the county and city properties we've got a lot of different constraints in this area and so we need to look at all of those the data the future and you know look at what are the trade-offs going to be some examples this is not a comprehensive list but you know should what trade-off might be less travel versus a more walkable environment. Wider sidewalks or more on street parking. Those two things are going to be a trade-off in this process.

Anthony Amosjust a comment and question to follow up on on what we all brought up I think this is a unique opportunity for us to really start thinking outside of the box in all facets and I think it really is going to start from this type of study to see what can we implement what can we do that supports our businesses supports our pedestrians let's just become more of that nightlife that we've been that we talked about back in January and that's going to come from everywhere from economic development to planning to transportation to council so it's going to be an all-hands-on-deck situation just a question that I had so what is coordination with the county going to be like for certain things like the South Street extension but also you know
