At the June 12, 2025 PRAB Regular Meeting, Stormwater Manager Satoshi Eto presented a newly expanded stream assessment covering 128 segments — a significant increase from the 31 segments assessed in 2007 — using ArcGIS technology. Based on that assessment and community survey feedback, staff recommended moving forward with preliminary engineering for Daniels Run Park (segment 2), and conceptual engineering and phasing for the Accotink Creek corridor from Fairfax Boulevard to Pickett Road (segments 5 and 6). On July 1, 2025, staff provided an update to the City Council during a work session, where the July 1 transcript indicates the recommendation encompasses three stream segments total, with segment 2 prioritized for preliminary engineering due to community preference, erosion potential, and water quality improvement opportunities.
Grant funding options and community outreach — including potential engagement of George Mason University students to evaluate macroinvertebrates as water quality indicators — were also discussed. No formal vote or action has been taken by the City Council.
