The City of Fairfax's Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP) 5-Year Update is a long-term planning document covering a twenty-year horizon, required by state code to be updated every five years; the previous update was completed in 2021. Work on the update was underway by at least July 2025, with a public meeting held on November 20, 2025, at Katherine Johnson Middle School Library and a community survey open through the end of 2025.

The seat was previously held by Commissioner Coleman, whose resignation from the Planning Commission in late October 2025 created a vacancy on the committee. The vacancy was noted in staff reports at the November 10 and November 24 meetings. At the November 24 meeting, Commissioner Rice volunteered to serve as interim representative while the matter was pending.
On December 8, 2025, the Planning Commission formally resolved the vacancy by appointing Commissioner Lockhart as its representative, approved by a unanimous 6-0 roll call vote.
