Rock the Block
Rock the Block is a recurring outdoor community event series organized by the City of Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department, running from approximately May through October each year.
The events feature music, food trucks, and entertainment along a main commercial strip, drawing residents and visitors from across the region. The 2025 season concluded with a final event on October 24th, and the 2026 season opened with a first event on May 22nd, with subsequent events scheduled for June 26th and continuing through the fall. The event has been discussed in connection with several policy and operational topics, including firearms ordinance signage requirements, food truck meals tax revenue leakage (vendors registered outside the city not remitting local meals tax), sustainability efforts (compostable cups noted at a 2025 event), and the limited economic spillover to non-food local businesses during events.
Rock the Block is identified as one of the city's signature community events alongside the Independence Day Parade, Fall Festival, and the Chocolate Lovers Festival.
Still open
- Whether the city can develop a mechanism to capture meals tax revenue from out-of-jurisdiction food truck vendors operating at Rock the Block and other city events (raised April 2026, no resolution recorded).
- Whether signage protocols for firearms-restricted zones at Rock the Block and similar events have been formalized following the concealed carry incident in August 2025 and related ordinance discussions.
- Whether sustainability practices such as compostable cups will be formally extended or expanded at future Rock the Block events.
- Remaining 2026 Rock the Block dates and end-of-season scheduling beyond the June 26th event.
What members have said
- Sarah Creel (public commenter)
At the October 14, 2025 City Council meeting, Creel cited Rock the Block as one of the valued community events her family has enjoyed over 23 years in Fairfax City, while urging the Council to pass proposed firearms ordinance amendments without delay, arguing the city lags behind surrounding jurisdictions.
- Unattributed council/board member (April 7, 2026)
Expressed frustration that food trucks at Rock the Block and other events are registered outside the city — in the county, West Virginia, or elsewhere — meaning meals tax generated at the event does not flow to the city; suggested exploring whether Richmond could help address this or whether another mechanism could capture that revenue.
- Unattributed council/board member (April 7, 2026)
Noted from Rock the Block conversations that local businesses beyond key restaurants on the main strip see little revenue benefit from the event, as attendees come primarily for music and entertainment rather than shopping, and suggested exploring whether event timing adjustments could encourage more movement around the city.
