AVID program
The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is a college and career readiness initiative operating across City of Fairfax schools, with particular depth at the elementary level in Title I schools Providence ES and Daniel's Run ES.
Daniels Run Elementary School (DRES) is a City of Fairfax public elementary school that is the subject of a major capital renovation project. On April 7, 2025, the School Board approved a reallocation of CIP funds to support completion of a vestibule security project at DRES, contingent on FCPS approval for the City to reimburse FCPS for executing it.

The program is described as closing opportunity gaps for struggling students by building skills in writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading (the "WICOR" strategies), and is implemented school-wide rather than as a standalone elective. As of early 2026, both Providence and Daniel's Run have been recognized as exemplars among peer divisions, with other principals and building leaders visiting to observe their implementation. A major milestone occurred on May 1, 2026, when Providence ES hosted a National AVID Organization regional showcase for mid-Atlantic and southern states, featuring student-led classroom tours and administrator panels.
The program also extends to the secondary level; data from Fairfax High School's AVID program was cited in April 2025 in a reflection on whole-school college readiness. Regular community-facing events such as Math & AVID Night (November 2025) and a college awareness day (September 2026) keep families engaged with the program's goals.
