The proposal drew sustained public opposition, particularly over concerns about the loss of mature oak-hickory forest trees, with opponents calling for cancellation as early as January 2025. At the March 11, 2025 City Council work session, Councilmember Bates stated his support for canceling the trail, and Councilmember Hall requested more information on it; no formal action was taken at that meeting. At an April 8, 2025 discussion, questions were raised about potential financial obligations tied to grant funding (including what may be an $8 million grant) if the trail were canceled.
On April 22, 2025, the City Council voted 6-0 to terminate all actions with respect to the Country Club Hills Connector Trail. A subsequent July 2025 update confirmed that a nearby stream restoration project in the same geographic area is not dependent on or related to the canceled trail.
