At the July 28, 2026 City Council meeting, Mayor Read noted that Restaurant Week was scheduled to coincide with GMU's return to campus, framing Fairfax City as GMU's hometown and encouraging residents to welcome returning students and their families. He also congratulated GMU on hiring a new provost, Marion K. Underwood from Colorado State University, joining July 27, 2026, and described GMU as one of 131 R1 research universities and a valuable neighbor offering opportunities to the city (June 9, 2026).
On May 27, 2025, Mayor Read personally presented the proclamation acknowledging June as LGBTQIA+ Pride Month to the Pride Festival Committee and the Metropolitan Community Church.
